Review from 'Summer' Canterbury Handbook:
Japanese food has a reputation for being healthy. And sushi could almost be described as a super-food - light, healthy, nutritious, yet surprisingly filling. No wonder it’s becoming more and more popular in this country. And now Canterbury has its very own sushi bar, right in the centre of the city! So we popped in one hot afternoon…
We sat down at the conveyor belt, and I was immediately impressed by the speed. There is no hanging around while you order and wait for your food to arrive. The food is ready and comes to you! You watch a tantalising array of colourful plates pass by, and you choose whatever you fancy and exactly when you want it. Perfect for a quick, light lunch or if you’re going out in the evening to the cinema next door.
It’s also a great experience. We had fun trying to work out from the colours and numbers just what we had taken from the conveyor belt. All the plates are colour coded, from pink (£1.50 per plate) to yellow (£3.50 per plate) but we opted for the special deal whereby you can have any 5 plates for £10, or any 10 plates for £17.50.
With so many plates, we could try a whole range of flavours. And because you’re eating little by little, you find yourself really enjoying and savouring each mouthful. The sushi itself is fantastic – excellent quality and beautifully presented. I went for the eel nigiri followed by the salmon and tuna nigiri, which were incredibly fresh. My companion quickly became addicted to the edamame beans and also loved the uramaki (inside out rolls) with the flying-fish roe on the outside. But if you’re worried it’s all raw fish, fear not! There are plenty of options to try if you’re a sushi novice, including the tamago (egg roll), crispy chicken, or avocado and cucumber. Oh, and don’t forget to have some of the excellent miso soup (with free re-fills)! And if you fancy a change from sushi, you can also get a bowl of hot noodles for just £5.50.
We washed it all down with draught Asahi beer and lots of green tea. I came away feeling pleasantly full, raring to go, and positively saint-like at the thought of all the nutritious things I had just eaten. Next time you’re in town, I thoroughly recommend you give Yoshi a try!
