How to find a percentage (%)

17 out of 30 for Maths … 19 out of 40 for French … 40 out of 65 for Science

If you get marks like this at school do you know how to turn them into percentages so you can compare them?

With a calculator it’s easy. Let’s take the first example: 17 out of 30 for Maths.

Enter first the mark you got (17) then press ÷ (divide) and enter the maximum possible mark – 30.
To find your percentage multiply all this by 100 and press the Answer key: 56.66666667. (All those numbers after the decimal point are a bit annoying, but you can just round them up to 57%).

Now try working out the percentages for French and Science. Which was your best result?

For answers see below

French 47.5% (call it 48%) Science 61.53846154 (62%) Best result: Science.
